Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to attend Pride Cymru, a vibrant celebration of love, acceptance, and equality. As a proud member of PRISM, the Welsh Government’s LGBTQ+ employee network, I had the honour of marching in the parade alongside my work colleagues for the very first time. Previously, I had only worked in various schools and given that schools don’t usually participate in pride parades, this was a first-time experience for me.

We know that we cannot be complacent. Unfortunately, we’re in an age where it can feel like our rights are at risk of being rolled back. As LGBTQ+ people we all too often still face discrimination and harassment.

Making Wales period proud is one of my priorities as Minister of Social Justice. This week, we launched our A Period Proud Wales plan which is all about promoting a cultural change around periods.
Nobody should be ashamed, embarrassed or disadvantaged because of their period. Our vision is to eradicate period poverty and end all stigma around periods.

We recently became the first UK nation to pass legislation to lower the default national speed limit on residential roads and busy pedestrian streets from 30mph to 20mph when the Senedd voted in favour in July this year. Work is now underway to get Wales ready for that change, as limits will begin to change from September next year.

Today is a historic day for children’s rights here in Wales and a day which I have waited a long time to see. It may have taken over 20 years of campaigning to make the physical punishment of children illegal, but the day has finally arrived and I couldn’t be happier.

Too often violence against women is framed as an issue of women’s safety rather than what it actually is: male violence. The conversation becomes about street lighting and alarms when the least safe place for a woman is in her own home.

The rights of the child are at the heart of celebrations to mark World Children’s Day on 20 November. Wales will soon join over 60 countries around the world who have put children’s rights centre stage by outlawing the physical punishment of children. The law will change in Wales on 21 March 2022 with the removal of the archaic defence of reasonable punishment. It can’t come soon enough as far as I’m concerned.
