During #LGBTHistoryMonth, we reflect on how far we’ve come in the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and we celebrate the lives of the LGBTQ+ activists and allies that came before us. We know that we cannot be complacent. Unfortunately, we’re in an age where it can feel like our rights are at risk of being rolled back. As LGBTQ+ people we all too often still face discrimination and harassment.
Making Wales period proud is one of my priorities as Minister of Social Justice. This week, we launched our A Period Proud Wales plan which is all about promoting a cultural change around periods. We recently became the first UK nation to pass legislation to lower the default national speed limit on residential roads and busy pedestrian streets from 30mph to 20mph when the Senedd voted in favour in July this year. Work is now underway to get Wales ready for that change, as limits will begin to change from September next year.
I’m Charlotte Williams. In 2020 I led work on the teaching of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic histories and contributions in support of the new curriculum. In 2022, I was really pleased that the Welsh Government made mandatory the teaching of these perspectives for all schools and early years settings in Wales.
Today is World Mental Health Day, a day to acknowledge the importance of good mental health and the continuing work to protect and support the mental health of people around the world. Days such as this provide an opportunity to remind ourselves of the value of being more open and mindful of our own and others’ mental health and wellbeing.
